Narrative Clip 2 - 2 Steps forward, 3 steps back

My Review:

The Narrative Clip 2 is the second generation of a wearable life-blogging camera. As a second generation of a Kickstarter product, you'd think there'd be a lot of improvements and very few drawbacks, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

2 Steps Forward:

  • Much better Field of View, much more usable pictures
  • Better resolution, much more usable pictures
  • Better overall camera
  • Can do short movies (up to 30 seconds)

3 Steps Back:

  • Insanely late delivery after pre-order, especially to the U.S. Did they seriously forget to get FCC and UL approvals? AFTER having done it right for the Kickstarter??
  • STILL no off switch. You can put it in low power mode by placing it face down or in a dark pocket, but it's not off completely and it's slowly running down your battery so it's almost dead when you want to use it again.
  • With the old Clip 1, I could at least leave it on the charger, face down, so it'd be usable when I wanted to take it. But I'm afraid to do that with the Clip 2 because it gets really hot while plugged in - either it's got a bad charging circuit or it's due to the WiFi uploader support. But if it's due to the WiFi uploader, it should turn WiFi off when it's done uploading....
  • QC is worse - I ordered two. One worked perfectly (other than the charging heat issue), the other I'm still trying to get to take its first picture. It charges and freezes.
  • For a startup, their support isn't good. They seem to treat it as an afterthought and only work during standard business hours. A startup should try harder. They should be more passionate about support.
All-in-all, the hardware is better. The firmware and Windows uploader need a lot of work - even though this thing shipped a year late, they still didn't get the firmware right. Let's hope they're still working on it.
